  15. <p>     DIED. JOHN LUDLOW GOULD, 79, TV critic; in Concord, California.
  16. Writing as "Jack" for the New York Times, Gould became known
  17. during the first decades of television as one of its most relentless
  18. critics and analyzers, acquiring a reputation as "the conscience
  19. of the industry." Among his more prominent pieces were stories
  20. on the late-'50s quiz-show scandals and his scathing assault
  21. on the networks in 1956 for running game shows instead of broadcasting
  22. the live U.N. Security Council proceedings on the Suez crisis.
